Headlines & Launches

Shopify folds its AI agent knowledge base into the admin (4 minute read)

Shopify replaced its standalone Knowledge Base app with a built in admin section under Sales channels, Agentic, Knowledge base, retiring the app on January 15, 2027. Store policies and contact details publish automatically, and the data is publicly reachable through Shopify's Storefront MCP, so ecommerce teams should check what is already live and re-add anything they want kept once the old app is gone.

Google says disabled Discover source clicks were a bug (2 minute read)

Google's Rajan Patel confirmed on X that an experiment had disabled taps on sources under Discover's AI summary cards, and that the experiment has now been turned off. The person who flagged it says a different experiment has since replaced it, so publishers relying on Discover referral clicks should keep watching for further changes.

Google clarifies Googlebot must follow redirects to favicons (3 minute read)

Google updated its favicon documentation to spell out that Googlebot must be able to crawl the homepage, follow any redirect from there to the favicon's location, and that none of these URLs can be blocked by robots.txt. It reads as a clarification rather than a policy change, but it is worth a quick check that your homepage, its redirects and your favicon file are all crawlable.

Google will let connected Gmail and Photos data shape AI Mode ads (5 minute read)

Google's privacy policy, updated October 16, now allows content from Gmail, Photos and Drive to inform personalised ads once a user opts into Personal Intelligence in Search or Gemini, and Google has started testing AI Mode ads using those signals. If you advertise in AI Mode, expect targeting options built on this opt-in data to start appearing in your Google Ads account.

Deep Dives & Analysis

Another unconfirmed Google ranking update, volatility still climbing (5 minute read)

Barry Schwartz reports a fresh spike in ranking volatility and SEO chatter starting roughly 12 hours before his October 27 report, the latest in a run of unconfirmed updates following October 24, October 20 to 21 and October 16, on top of the confirmed September spam update. Google has not confirmed anything, and tracking tools are struggling to agree, so treat any single day's ranking swing with caution right now.

Google says to relax about stalled Search Console indexing data (5 minute read)

Responding to a Redditor whose Page Indexing report had not updated since October 16, Google's John Mueller suggested SEOs may need to be more relaxed about Search Console data freshness rather than assume a pipeline fault. If your indexing report looks frozen, it may be a reporting lag rather than an actual indexing problem, so check actual search performance before troubleshooting the dashboard itself.

Looking things up is catching up with writing in ChatGPT (4 minute read)

OpenAI's Signals data for August puts information seeking at 20.7% of consumer ChatGPT messages, nearly level with writing at 20.6%, though writing moved back ahead in September. The rise is smaller than an earlier OpenAI and Harvard paper found, so if you quote growth in ChatGPT's use as a search tool, be clear which dataset the number comes from.

Brodie Clark: Google overview citation cards are disappearing on desktop (1 minute read)

Brodie Clark reports a sharp drop in the visible citation cards that used to show 2 to 3 domains alongside Google AI Overviews, a change already standard on mobile that now looks permanent on desktop too. With AI Overviews appearing on 83% of US desktop queries according to Semrush data he cites, sites losing this visible credit may see impressions and visibility fall even where their content is still being used.

Glenn Gabe: Semrush details how it filters poisoned search results (1 minute read)

Semrush says poisoned SERPs show up either as whole pages of mismatched results or as normal looking pages with loosely related results further down, and that it now flags and excludes clearly invalid results and revalidates flagged data. If you rely on Semrush data for rank tracking, this explains some of the recent volatility and odd readings.

Nicholas Dulait: One ecommerce store now gets as many visits from AI as from Google (1 minute read)

Nicholas Dulait shares a customer's GA4 data showing ChatGPT and other AI assistants delivering nearly as many sessions as Google organic over 28 days, with a higher engagement rate, after the store added buying guides and named product comparisons for each category. He argues this works because ChatGPT searches queries like "best X 2026" and "X vs Y" rather than answering from memory, so those are the pages worth building.
