Spam update finishes 🧹, manual actions rise ⚠️, AI index paper 🤖

Issue 11, 9 October 2026

What changed in search and AI answers, for marketing teams, in five minutes.

Headlines & Launches

Google September 2026 spam update has finished rolling out (7 minute read)

The update ran from 24 September to 8 October, two weeks rather than the usual two days, and Google called it a normal update affecting all languages and locations. Some in the community describe its impact as closer to a core update, so if your traffic moved in this window, check the dates before assuming a core update or a site change caused it.

Google launches a UGC Fresh Data Program for platforms (4 minute read)

Approved platforms hosting user generated content can now push content and interaction signals to Google through a dedicated pipeline, separate from the Indexing API and regular crawling, so fresh posts reach Search faster. Google is explicit that inclusion is not guaranteed; eligible platforms need a large volume of UGC, a public user base, and content on public pages with no login or paywall, so this matters mainly if your site is a forum, review or community platform rather than a standard brand site.

Google Merchant Center may disapprove products that change too often (3 minute read)

Updated help documentation says products with price or availability changes more than once a day may be disapproved rather than updated if Google detects a mismatch, and repeated mismatches can pause updates altogether. If your ecommerce feed uses frequent automated price changes, this is worth a check with whoever manages your product feed before listings start dropping.

Google Local Service Ads rewrites its lead billing rules (3 minute read)

Updated documentation adds a rule that unanswered calls can be billed if the caller stays connected over 20 seconds during business hours, plus clearer rules on IVR calls, a 30 day lead review window, and a 15 day no-recharge rule for repeat contacts from the same customer. If you run Local Service Ads, these changes affect what you get billed for, so worth a read before your next invoice surprises you.
