Headlines & Launches

Bing Webmaster Tools groups AI citations into topics (4 minute read)

Microsoft added a beta Topics Portfolio to the AI performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools, which groups the grounding queries where a site appears into thematic clusters, such as football or taxes, showing demand and competitiveness per theme. It only appears if there is enough data for a site, and gives marketers a way to see which subject areas drive their AI citations rather than tracking queries one by one.

Google rolls out Gemini 4 Argon to AI Mode subscribers (3 minute read)

Google added Gemini 4 Argon to the AI Mode model menu for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, selectable from the plus icon, the same day the model opened to developers and the Gemini app. Google says it handles multi step tasks and follow up instructions better, but the free tier default is unchanged, so most visitors will not see a difference yet.

Google may test pharmaceutical ads inside AI Overviews and AI Mode (3 minute read)

A Google spokesperson told Adweek the company has "recently expanded to include certain pharmaceutical products" within AI Mode and AI Overviews ad tests, limited to the US and starting this month. Barry Schwartz could not spot any live examples himself, and Google told him it made no recent policy changes, so this looks like an early, limited test rather than a wide rollout.

Google Business Profiles adds more dietary attributes for restaurants (3 minute read)

Google added gluten free, dairy free, halal and kosher attributes for restaurant menu items in Google Business Profiles, alongside the existing vegetarian and vegan tags. Google's Lisa Landsman says tagged dishes will help listings stand out when people search things like "gluten free dinner near me," so restaurants should update their menu items to capture that intent.

Deep Dives & Analysis

AI brand recommendations change depending on the language asked (16 minute read)

Reza Moaiandin at Search Engine Journal argues that AI visibility checks run only in English miss how chatbots reason and recommend differently when the same buying question is asked in Chinese, Russian, Arabic or Persian, citing Statcounter data that ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini drive over 90% of AI referral traffic in markets like Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan and Singapore. Brands with international or multilingual customers, including within US cities like Los Angeles, should test AI visibility in the languages their buyers actually use, not just English.

Google's Mueller explains why site migrations can drag past four months (4 minute read)

A site owner on Reddit saw a domain migration succeed by April 2026, only for Google to reverse it four months later, deindexing the new domain and reviving the old one in search results. Google's John Mueller pointed to an overlooked setting that can cause this, so teams planning a domain change should check his guidance before migrating to avoid a months long limbo.

Google podcast covers how PDFs are indexed and whether they rank in AI answers (6 minute read)

Google's Martin Splitt and John Mueller released a Search Off the Record episode on how PDFs get converted to HTML for crawling, how links and images are extracted, file size limits, and whether PDFs can rank in Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Teams that publish spec sheets, menus or reports as PDFs get a direct source on the technical pitfalls, like rasterised pages and duplicate binary blobs, that can keep that content out of AI answers.

Chrome adds experimental Core Web Vitals for single page apps (4 minute read)

Chrome has added experimental versions of all three Core Web Vitals to the Chrome User Experience Report that count soft navigations, the in-app page changes single page apps make without a full reload, available now in BigQuery and the CrUX API. About 70% of sites have little soft navigation traffic and won't notice a change, but SPA-heavy sites may see higher scores once Search Console adopts the data, expected around May 2027.

YouTube is testing Ask YouTube inside the Shorts player (3 minute read)

YouTube is running a limited, English-only test that lets signed-in viewers over 18 tap a sparkle icon on select Shorts to ask questions about what they're watching, alongside new feeds for finding similar creators. If your brand publishes Shorts, this is worth watching since it extends the same Ask YouTube feature already live on the watch page to short-form video discovery.

Google Merchant Center product videos, including YouTube links and self-hosted files, are getting stuck in "preview processing" and showing as static images rather than playing on listings, a widespread issue with no fix date yet.
