What changed in search and AI answers, for marketing teams, in five minutes.

Headlines & Launches

Websites are closing their doors to AI agents (6 minute read)

The Verge reports that Yelp, Delta, JPMorgan Chase, Charles Schwab and others are blocking AI agents from OpenAI, Meta and xAI from completing tasks on their sites, with Cars.com and Amtrak also reportedly cut off. If your site handles bookings or transactions, expect AI agent traffic to be inconsistent for now, since major services are choosing to shut them out rather than build for them.

Meta drops disputed scraping language after pushback (2 minute read)

Meta removed a clause in its commercial terms that legal experts said could let it scrape any business's website and use the content to train its AI, after Nieman Lab flagged it as a "remarkable provision." Meta says the change is a clarification, not a shift in how it crawls, but it followed this item's companion story (9) showing the same clause had already widened Meta's crawling rights beyond advertisers. If you run a Meta business account, your content's AI training status is back to where it was before this scare, worth rechecking as terms keep shifting.

Google quietly drops Indexing API approval steps from its docs (3 minute read)

Google removed the approval form and request instructions for its Indexing API from its documentation on 16 October, though the default quotas (200 publish requests a day) are still listed. The changelog only says it removed "an outdated form" without explaining whether approval is still required, so if you rely on the Indexing API for fast indexing of job listings or similar content, check your project's current quota in the API Console rather than the docs.

Google opens a direct data pipeline for approved forums and platforms (9 minute read)

Google's Search Central docs, updated 8 October, describe a UGC Fresh Data Program letting approved forums and social platforms submit content and interaction signals through a pipeline separate from crawling and the Indexing API. Google says joining does not guarantee inclusion in Search, so this mainly matters if you run or partner with a large community platform rather than a typical brand site.

Deep Dives & Analysis

ChatGPT's own API barely predicts what ChatGPT actually cites (5 minute read)

A preprint from researchers at the National University of Singapore and Xi'an Jiaotong University found that Google search results and OpenAI's Responses API together matched only 26.2% of the exact pages ChatGPT cited in its web app, though they matched 48.7% of the same sites. The authors recommend tracking visibility at the site level, rerunning prompts and retesting after model updates, which means any tool claiming to predict your ChatGPT citations from Google rankings or API calls alone should be treated with caution.

Self-promotional listicles are common in AI product recommendations (16 minute read)

A Minuttia and Convex Works study of 18,084 software questions across Google, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity found that 34% to 47% of cited listicles are self-promotional, with 93% of those favouring the vendor's own product and 87% ranking it first, yet only 16% disclose the vendor relationship. The study also found citation overlap with Google's top 10 is low (21% to 28%), so a listicle written by a vendor about their own category can realistically win AI citations even without ranking well on Google.

A spike in ranking volatility follows last month's spam update (6 minute read)

Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable reports a sharp rise in SEO forum chatter and tool-measured ranking volatility over 16 to 17 October, following the three waves of disruption from the September 2026 spam update that completed 8 October. If your organic traffic moved sharply this week, check whether it lines up with this volatility spike before assuming a site-specific cause.

Microsoft is testing a "Read more" link at the end of Bing search snippets that leads to the same page as the title, following a similar change Google made roughly a year ago.

Google Tag Manager rolls out an Optimized Tagging Experience (11 minute read)

GTM now offers a migration wizard that lets containers send data to Google Analytics and Ads destinations without loading separate Google tag libraries, which can reduce the JavaScript your site loads but needs testing before publishing.

Aleyda Solis: roundup flags more prominent AI Overview links and a Universal Cart rollout (1 minute read)

Aleyda Solis's weekly roundup notes Google is testing more prominent links in AI Mode and AI Overviews, has launched a Universal Cart spanning Search and Gemini in the US, and that ChatGPT resumed tagging outbound links with utm_source=chatgpt.com after briefly dropping it, which explains any dip in ChatGPT referral traffic some teams may have noticed.
