AI Overviews pass 80% 🤖, Google tightens spam guide on shareable pages 📄, organic traffic drop isn't only AI 📉

Issue 22, 27 October 2026

What changed in search and AI answers, for marketing teams, in five minutes.

Headlines & Launches

Google AI Overviews now appear on over 80% of searches (3 minute read)

Data from Semrush, SE Ranking and seoClarity cited by Search Engine Roundtable shows AI Overviews now showing on over 80% of Google searches, up from 50% last June and about 15% the year before. SE Ranking also found AI Overviews on 82.5% of US brand searches specifically. This means your pages, and your brand name, are increasingly being summarised before a user ever reaches a traditional result, so being cited inside the overview matters as much as ranking below it.

Google tells sites to keep share only pages out of its index (3 minute read)

Google added a new 'Only index content meant for Search' section to its spam guide, advising noindex tags or robots.txt blocking by default for pages built for sharing, collaboration or utility rather than public search. It also added Search Console checks for unexpected spikes in indexed pages. If your product has share links, generated outputs or embeddable tools, check with your developer that those pages are not being indexed by accident, since that kind of bloat can now draw closer scrutiny from Google.

Google tests removing clickable sources from Discover AI summaries (3 minute read)

Google is reportedly testing a change that disables the sources button on AI summary cards in Discover, so users can no longer open the mini feed of linked articles, as spotted by Damien Andell on X. Discover already added AI summaries in 2025 to publisher frustration, and this test would remove even the limited click path those summaries left. If Discover sends you readers, this is worth watching since it could mean fewer, not more, chances to be clicked from a Discover AI summary.

Meta delays its crawling terms update to November 20 (3 minute read)

Meta pushed back the effective date of its updated Commercial Terms and Self-Serve Ad Terms from October 30 to November 20, saying it needs more time to explain the changes, including how its crawlers work, after complaints to EU and UK regulators. The crawling permission itself, which lets Meta crawl pages tied to a business's products or services, is unchanged. If you advertise with Meta or manage a Facebook Page, the extra crawling access is still coming, just a few weeks later than planned.

Deep Dives & Analysis

Brands ChatGPT skips without search also get skipped with it (6 minute read)

Graphite's analysis of comparison prompts found that brands ChatGPT rarely mentioned in answers without search were also rarely named when it did search, even when those brands appeared on many of the pages ChatGPT actually cited; among brands mentioned on at least 15% of cited pages, median visibility was only 11% if ChatGPT named them in under a quarter of its no-search answers. Graphite, which sells AEO services, argues brands need to work on what AI models learn in training, not just on getting cited, so being well covered on the web may not be enough if your brand barely appears in a model's baseline knowledge.

Organic traffic is falling, but AI is not the only reason (9 minute read)

Kevin Indig's analysis of three years of Similarweb data across 10,000 US and French domains finds uneven organic search losses alongside growing paid search, while AI referral traffic remains a small share of total visits overall. The two year organic search comparison covers August 2024 versus August 2026 across thousands of sites with complete data. Before pinning a traffic drop on AI Overviews or chatbots, it is worth checking your own channel mix, since paid search growth or other shifts may explain more of the change than AI does.

Tactics & Tools

Check whether your shareable pages are unintentionally indexed (4 minute read)

Google's updated user-generated spam guidance now explicitly covers 'tools that let users publish shared pages, generated content, or web apps' and tells platforms to add noindex or crawling restrictions to pages meant only for direct sharing, not public search. Google says the goal is to help platforms keep these pages out of the index and detect spam earlier. If your product lets customers generate shareable links, reports or outputs, ask your developer to audit whether those URLs are indexed and add noindex tags where they should not be.

Google Ads adds a one click AI Max experiment setup (3 minute read)

Google Ads now offers a one click recommendation that automatically sets up a 50/50 experiment comparing a standard Search campaign against an AI Max treatment, with manual refinement available at the ad group level. If you run Search ads, this lowers the effort needed to test AI Max against your existing setup.

Google documents AI generated review summaries in Search ads (3 minute read)

Google published a help page confirming that review summaries appearing in Search ads are AI generated, aggregating only positive reviews from across the web to build trust in sponsored results. These summaries are already live, so check how your own ads are being represented if you run Search campaigns.

Reddit's CEO points brands toward building their own communities (8 minute read)

At Mod World, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman expanded on a vision favouring deeper communities over search or AI traffic, reinforcing a pattern from recent earnings calls of Reddit prioritising why people stay over how they arrive. For brands relying on Reddit visibility in AI answers, this signals Reddit's own priorities are shifting toward owned communities like subreddits rather than search driven discovery.

Aleyda Solis: More Google searches, but fewer organic and paid clicks (1 minute read)

Aleyda Solis compared a 'coffee tumbler' search on Google US between September 2025 and 2026 using Similarweb and Ahrefs data: search volume rose 38%, but organic clicks fell 8% and paid clicks fell 41%, as the SERP shrank from 10 traditional organic results to 5, with an AI Overview, Shopping pack, Top Stories, Image pack and People Also Ask filling the rest. Reddit now holds 3 of those 5 remaining organic slots alongside Amazon and Zara Home. Rising search demand for your category no longer means rising traffic, so track clicks, not just volume, when judging whether a keyword is still worth targeting.

Aleyda Solis: Check Semrush's AI Visibility Index for your market, not just the US (1 minute read)

Semrush updated its AI Visibility Index to cover 9 markets and 22 industries across ChatGPT, AI Mode, Gemini and AI Overviews, and Aleyda Solis notes it shows clear differences in sources and brands cited even between English speaking markets. The tool is free to browse. If you sell outside the US, do not assume your US AI visibility work carries over; check your actual market's sources and citations directly.
