What changed in search and AI answers, for marketing teams, in five minutes.

Deep Dives & Analysis

AI Overviews now appear on 83% of branded searches (7 minute read)

Ahrefs found AI Overviews show up for 83% of searches on brand names, with 76.2% of those appearing in the top position, and Wikipedia, YouTube and LinkedIn as the most common sources cited alongside the brand. For many brands, that means a growing share of people searching your own company name see someone else's summary before they see your site, so check how your brand is described in AI Overviews and fix any third-party sources that get it wrong.

Google shares typical timelines for crawling, indexing and recovery (4 minute read)

At a Search Central event in Barcelona, Gary Illyes gave rough timing ranges for Google's processes: new URLs are typically discovered in about 20 hours but refreshed every 30 days, indexing takes about 1.5 hours typically but can take months, and site moves usually settle in one to three months but can take up to a year. If your traffic has not recovered from a site change or core update, this gives you a rough sense of whether it's still early days or genuinely stalled.

A Reddit GEO experiment got banned after boosting AI citations (9 minute read)

Otterly.ai built four subreddit communities to test Reddit visibility in AI answers, reaching 474 AI citations and sixth place among 126 established subreddits in 60 days, then had all four removed by Reddit for violating its content manipulation policy because the experiment used injected engagement (bots alongside real members). The team also found ChatGPT citing reddit.com 89% less after an August update, so manufactured Reddit presence is both riskier and less rewarding than it was.

AI Mode and ChatGPT now offer standing searches that keep monitoring after you leave (10 minute read)

Google rolled AI Mode's information monitoring out to all users on 28 September, and OpenAI launched always-on ChatGPT agents called dots the next day, both of which keep working on a request after the initial answer. For local businesses, this means fresh information published after someone's first search could still reach them later through these updates.
