What changed in search and AI answers, for marketing teams, in five minutes.

Headlines & Launches

Cloudflare pilot helps ChatGPT index hundreds of millions of pages (4 minute read)

Cloudflare and OpenAI say a research pilot covering about 1% of Cloudflare's network has helped ChatGPT Search discover and index hundreds of millions of new pages, including ones with few inbound links, such as a product manual or a restaurant's menu and hours. OpenAI still ranks pages itself and existing crawler access settings still apply, and neither company says how often the new pages get cited or how much traffic they send. If your site runs behind Cloudflare, this is a new, mostly invisible route into ChatGPT's index, worth watching rather than acting on yet.

Google AI Overviews label is missing in some results (3 minute read)

Glenn Gabe spotted AI Overviews for shows and movies that carry no 'AI Overview' label on desktop, while the same result on mobile is labelled. Barry Schwartz, who reported it, suspects a bug and has asked Google. If confirmed, it means your analytics may undercount how often you are appearing inside Google's AI answers, since labelling is also how many tracking tools detect them.

Google Business Profiles tests government ID verification (3 minute read)

Google is testing a new verification option for Business Profiles that asks owners to upload a photo of a government ID, alongside the existing phone, email, video call and mail methods. It is not yet in Google's official help documentation, and it may be tied to Local Service Ads certification rather than a general rollout. If you manage a Google Business Profile, expect this option to appear as a choice, not a requirement, for now.

Gemini launches a business hub for small companies (5 minute read)

Google's Gemini app is rolling out a central hub for small business owners that connects to Shopify, Canva and Google Workspace, generates on-brand visuals from uploaded style guides, and turns spreadsheets into financial summaries. It is a productivity tool rather than a search or visibility feature, but it signals Google pushing Gemini deeper into the tools SaaS and ecommerce teams already use daily.

Deep Dives & Analysis

Search's share of publisher pageviews keeps falling (3 minute read)

Chartbeat's Q3 2026 report shows search made up 12% of North American publisher pageviews, down from 21% a year earlier, with nine of ten regions tracked seeing declines and only Africa rising. A falling share does not by itself prove fewer search visits, since it also reflects growth from other sources, so check your own referral counts rather than reading the industry chart as your own trend. If your traffic mix increasingly depends on channels other than search, this data backs that shift up at the industry level.

DeepSeek's new search API, tested for $0.08 (10 minute read)

Suganthan Mohanadasan tested DeepSeek's newly opened Search and Fetch API, which scores every result for authority on a 0 to 4 scale and claims to filter SEO and GEO spam; his own site scored 1 while spam PDFs on government and university domains scored 4, and the Fetch API pulled content from URLs disallowed by robots.txt. DeepSeek says it indexes hundreds of billions of pages and handles hundreds of millions of searches a day, making it a visibility channel worth checking even though its spam filtering looks unreliable in this early test. If you sell into markets where DeepSeek is used, your current authority score there may not reflect your site's real quality.

Tactics & Tools

Google tests removing the line under search result tabs (2 minute read)

Google is testing the removal of the horizontal rule that sits under the tabs (All, Images, News, etc.) beneath the search box, a minor visual change spotted independently and replicated by Barry Schwartz. It changes nothing about rankings or visibility, but if your team screenshots SERPs for reporting, expect the layout to look slightly different depending on who sees the test.

Bing tests hiding sitelinks under top results (2 minute read)

Bing is testing removal of the sitelinks that normally appear under a top search result, confirmed by Barry Schwartz replicating a test first spotted by Khushal Bherwani on the same query with and without them. If you rely on sitelinks to showcase multiple pages for your brand in Bing, check whether your own branded search still shows them, since this could reduce the real estate your listing occupies.

Yelp adds AI voice calls to check restaurant wait times (3 minute read)

Yelp's new Check for Me feature lets users send an AI voice agent to call a restaurant and ask about wait times, alongside an updated Yelp AI assistant with OpenTable booking, memory of past preferences and shareable lists. For restaurant and hospitality businesses, this adds another AI agent that may contact you directly on a customer's behalf, separate from how you show up in search results.

Jake Ward: Google's own timelines for crawling, indexing and serving (1 minute read)

Jake Ward compiled Google's published timelines for 23 crawling and indexing processes into one graphic, including roughly 20 hours to discover a new page, about 30 days to recrawl an existing one, and three to six months to recover from a core update. His practical advice: check the last crawl date in Search Console before assuming a change failed, and do not expect quick fixes after a core update hit.

Glenn Gabe: Ads are appearing inside AI Mode answers (1 minute read)

Glenn Gabe reports seeing no ads in AI Mode while signed in with Personal Intelligence, but plenty when using AI Mode in incognito, including an ad woven directly into a product list for a laptop search plus a larger ad module below it. He is not a fan of ads blended into the organic AI response, but expects Google to lean further into this as AI Mode becomes more central, which could mean more competition for attention even when you rank well in an AI answer.
